A village for Habitat of Humanity
Modern homes with dignity and light
Roxbury Estates is a pro-bono collaboration between Rick Sundberg and Habitat for Humanity Seattle/South King County located in the Delridge neighborhood in Seattle. The project consists of 10 housing units together on a donated site. Multiple scales of private and public spaces exist in the design. The houses are pushed to the edges, sitting on the perimeter to frame a midblock common area, for all residents to enjoy. Each house has a porch, allowing for semi-private activities.
The cadence of the neighborhood was given thoughtful consideration. Two-story houses lined the busy thoroughfare of S.W. Roxbury Street, with one-story houses matching the residential scale of adjacent streets. Built denser than usual than previous Habitat for Humanity projects, Roxbury Estates was an experiment in building inexpensive modern homes in an urban setting. The project engages a "modern regional language" through use of volume and light: using a butterfly roof configuration rather than the typical gabled roof meant larger interior volumes, allowing for more light and cross-ventilation opportunities.
