Located on the big island of Hawaii, 1800 feet above sea level, this home is part of a six building complex that includes guest quarters, studios and ranch structures. Designed to operate completely off the grid, photovoltaics harness the energy of the sun and expressive curvilinear roof forms funnel rainwater into cisterns. The home also uses a combination of reclaimed, new and local materials, taking advantage of the best each has to offer. Further taking into consideration site conditions, a series of wind breaks, modeled after the golden mean, provides a buffer against 20 mph prevailing winds.
