The White Center HUB (Hope Unity Belonging) is the “Big Idea” of the White Center Community Development Authority whose mission is to promote a high quality of life for White Center residents. Located on traditional Duwamish land, near schools and transit, the HUB is envisioned as a “place of learning, sharing and quality homes for working families” and includes a 4-story multi-family housing structure with 76 family oriented affordable units. In addition to the residential building, a 28,000 sq ft. community center building is proposed housing non-profit organizations and social services including health clinics, young adult education, teen engagement programs and the White Center Community Development Association among other community amenities.
The scheme focuses on the open space between the buildings that will provide a gathering space for the wider White Center Community and a symbiotic relationship to the adjacent Dick Thurnau Memorial Park.
A primary goal of the project is environmental stewardship. The design team is taking on the challenges of meeting a net-zero energy housing design, engaging with the local utilities to remove barriers on virtual net metering and load shifting, and building synergies with King County departments and Parks to magnify benefits and set a new standard.
